Contractors Design Services was originally established in January 2000 by Simon Smith, a Chartered Civil & Structural Engineer with extensive experience in the design of both Permanent and Temporary Works. Having worked for a major contractor he was aware of the critical importance of Temporary Works in projects ranging from new build to refurbishment of existing structures and could see the potential in specialising in that field.
A dedicated team
The company grew in size and reputation and became Limited in June 2005. At the current time there are four Senior Engineers (2 Chartered), one Engineer and three CAD Technicians working for a large number of clients, many of which are national contractors. In addition to Temporary Works Design, the practice deals with many Permanent Works Design projects, working with contractors throughout the life of the scheme. Our team has experience in working closely and sympathetically with English Heritage on projects such as the refurbishment of Oxford Castle and St. Pancras Chambers, and works in connection with many of the historic university buildings in both Oxford and Cambridge.
Resources to meet all needs
Over the course of a year the practice deals with approximately 450 individual projects, varying from swift provision of calculations for, say, a crane base, to working on the entire design of a hotel in central London. Many projects run for months or years and our team can meet the needs of major contractors for prompt site visits to deal with the day to day developments. The aim is to provide a fast-reacting, practical design service on a nationwide basis at competitive rates.
