St Bride Street
London EC4
St Bride Street Temporary façade retention of 4 storey plus basement building on corner of Farringdon Street, St. Bride Street and Fleet Street.
An external support system for this listed façade was prohibited by the City of London Corporation, therefore an internal support system had to be threaded through the existing structure which had a combination of timber and steelwork construction resulting from several modifications throughout its 100 year plus history. In addition, the temporary support steel had to be positioned to miss the new steel frame and piles which would be installed later and allow piling rig access.
Contractors Design Services developed a scheme for J F Hunt Demolition. The support structure is founded on small bored piles, some of which are located within existing pavement vaults. The support system itself comprised a series of external lattice trusses spanning between a braced tower and a braced portal frame. The use of external trusses reduced the space taken internally whilst allowing large spans. The entire temporary works had to be installed before structural demolition could commence.
Contractors Design Services devised this alternative support solution in association with J F Hunt Demolition to avoid the complicated interfacing between demolition and new steel frame erection that would have occurred with the original project.
