Residential Property
West London
Construction of a deep basement surrounding an exclusive residential property in West London for a private client.
The basement, which was up to 7m. deep, extended around 3 sides of property which had been supported by a piled raft installed by others. Contractors Design Services and City Basements designed and installed the perimeter sheet piling with a single level of temporary propping to allow rapid excavation beneath.
One particular feature of this project was the need to mine beneath the root zone of a protected tree located in the rear garden. This involved the use of Ischebeck Titan piles, King piles and temporary frames to allow the top 1.8m of the ground surrounding the tree to be retained. Amazingly, the tree survived the ordeal and continues to thrive.
To limit groundwater inflow during pool construction, cantilevered bored secant piles were used adjacent to the house raft piles. These also provided lateral resistance to the house piles.
This project was a finalist in Ground Engineering Awards 2009 – UK Project up to £1M and was judged “a neat project with strong environmental attributes and sound technical solutions”
